Parakeet Questions & Answers

Read on for parakeet cage questions and answers.

I had two parakeets for about 5 years. Philip died a few days ago. He had diarrhea and puffed up his feathers. Then he was fine for a few weeks and then suddenly declined one morning. He was laying on the bottom of the cage and crawling around. He would get on the perch for a second and then fall off. I took him out of the cage away from my other parakeet.I didn't have any money or a car to take him anywhere so I just tried to get him to drink water and kept him warm. He died that night. It's been a few days since he died and my other parakeet Pistachio has seemed to be fine. A little depressed the day it happened but now she sings all day like usual. Yesterday I looked at her droppings tray and the newspaper was completely soaked. Is it possible she caught what Philip caught? I'm keeping an eye on her now to see if she's doing anything out of the ordinary. I have a little bit of money today and I was wondering if I should go to the store to buy Ornacycline. Would this hurt her if she actually wasn't sick? I really don't have the money to take her to a vet.

I have 4 baby parakeets in a nesting box. I think the older and bigger 2 are trampling the younger 2. The oldest is 3 weeks old, has feathers and the younger 2 are bald. I am afraid that the 2 older will trample the younger 2. Can I place them in the Dad's cage and see if he will take care of them? Doglover, Thanks for experience. I shouldn't have to hand feed them :) The mom is still taking care of them. I was hoping to give the mom some help even though the dad cant' be in the same cage. AX - I appreciate your input on this, However I am looking for answers from people who have some experience with this. I have done extensive reading on this subject. As this is LIFE, things don't always go according to plan. This is my 2nd clutch and there are different problems with each one.The Father has to be removed if they are causing friction with the Mother - which is normal. Eventually, the mother will attack her babies when she start s re-laying eggs, so the babies have to be removed eventually as well. ain, thanks for your 2 cents.

My bird, Paris, today has been seeming really anxious. She's been dancing around her cage door, thrusting herself at it, and even flying around the cage till the hits the bottom. She obviously doesn't want to be in her cage. At one point, I took her out and set her on a lamp, one that she sits on often. Then, out of the blue, as i was playing with my dog she flew away and on to my HEAD. She's never acted like this before and I'm not sure if she may be sick (her feathers were almost always fluffed up since i got home). Also held her on my finger and she flew into the kitchen, which she also never does. Could she be sick or hurt (also, the other day she may have injured her wing flying around her cage and she's been flying a little softer)? Or is she just really needy and attention-seeking right now? Should I be worried? Never mind, we fed her and she stopped. I'm really sorry about your bird though, Gabriel :'(

I have 3 parakeets, I used to have them inside, but I have got allergies recently and plan to move the cage outside in day time and keep in garage at night. The cage will be in the shade from 11:00PM to dark. Anyone having parakeet outside? would someone letting me know if parakeet would be healthy living outside? (of course I keep them in garage when the weather getting below 50 F degree)

I know this sounds weird but my parakeet is constantly wanting to be out of his cage. I take him out as many times a day as i can which is quite often but he still always jumps around his cage and chirps like crazy anytime I put him back in. Also, anytime I open the cage door, he flies right out which scares me because my dog might get to him. Should I get a new cage? please help! he has a pretty large cage with one big mirror, a double mirror on his swing and one on his latter

They are aggressive with each other, and have caused a skull injury to another bird. As of right now, they are placed in separate cages with a male in each one. So, if I get these parakeets, they will obviously be separate from each other, possibly in different locations as well. They are one year old. My question is, will they be aggressive towards me or can I train them and create a bond with them? LOL, just to let you know your assumption is 100% wrong. I do NOT have the "budgies" yet, someone else put them up for sale. I have enough common sense to know that I shouldn't risk putting two same gender "budgies" together because of territorial issues. But thanks anyways :)

Hello my parakeet experts! Please help me out here since I never had a parakeet before. If I did something wrong please tell me! I want to be able to have my keet to perch on my finger, but I am sure that takes a lot of time. I got him about a week ago and let him settle down. Everyday I would go and talk to him for a bit, some days would be more. I have a balcony since I live in an apartment so whenever I wake up I would take him outside for some fresh air and by night I would bring him back in. Since I got him, few days later every now and then I would stick my hand in and it seemed to me he was unphased by my hand because he wasn't frantically moving or seemed scared. I was to able once to get him on my finger, but after that no luck. Sometimes he would nibble on my finger, but not exactly biting because I don't feel any pain. I didn't react to it. Later on I would continue and he would scoot away from my finger, so I decided to leave him be. Today morning I placed my hand and he was unphased by it again, but I didn't try anything because I was only cleaning his perches. By the evening I changed his food and millet. I was holding the new millet by my hand and I guess he really wanted the millet. He started eating it, but I moved away a bit because was adjusting and he bit my finger. Very different than the nibble. I just said, "No" in a serious tone. Didn't scare him. I am not sure if he was sorry because he let me pet him because I wanted to show him I didn't mean no harm. After that I got some seeds on that same finger and brought it to him. He ate from my finger. I am probably being too forceful ~_~ Can any of you parakeet experts tell me what should I do please? And should I leave the whole spray millet in his cage or cut some off and leave a tiny bit since I know it's suppose to be a treat. Thanks a lot!

I have six parakeets. They were given to me by a pet store owner who was going out of business. I've never had birds before and I feel like I am a little more than way over my head. My mother in law absolutely HATES the birds and wants them outside. My question is can my parakeets live outside and survive? I live in California. I am worried because one of the birds constantly escapes from the cage. I don't understand how she does it, I've nicknamed her Houdini. Any suggestions?

I haven't gotten them yet, but I'm planning on buying two female parakeets (with separate cages) that are for sale in my area. I'm 15 yrs old, and I'm going to be leaving the country for about 5 -6 weeks during the summer. I plan on bonding with my birds daily (teaching them tricks, playing, etc.) so considering that my father will be home throughout that duration to change water and food, will they be alright??

i have two little parakeets, and my mom put their cage outside because it was nice and warm..what she didnt kno was that the little door was open...so at like 5, we discover that one of them flew away...we searched everywhere for a couple hours..and still cant find him..): we also didnt see any evidence of it being eaten or something...the other bird we have keeps chirping...hopefully that can help somehow...do you think theres a chance he would come back...its almost 9...and i dont kno...is there any chance at all!? ): anything we can do to help him...please help!

I've had my parakeet for a little over a year. I got him when he was a baby and he is very tame, when i take him out he hops on my shoulder and sit for a few minutes then goes back to his cage. I could leave his cage open all day and he wouldn't come out unless I take him out. Why does he love to be locked up so much?

Ok, ive had my parakeet for about a month now. He still gets scared every now and then when i open the cage. Sometimes he will get on my finger(not on command) and sometimes he will run around the cage from my hand. once he is out of the cage he will stay on my hand for quite some time. how can i stop him from running away from my hand? any other suggestions?

bird seems to like to hang out on sunnys cage, i don't see any aggression with aether bird but is this ok...I have two parakeet's and sunny hangs out on thier cage, it doesn't seem to bother them. but Ive heard they should be on their own houses...I have many toys on all the cages inside and out...should I move them further apart or just let them deal with each other...Bird doesn't like hands but he will take treats from my hands...Sunny is tame and will let me do anything with him...is this ok or is Bird learning from Sunny that Im his friend. thanks for any info...Bird lover in MS

Ever since this morning, [I also have a green pet] She was fine untill I came to school. No one was home, but ever since I gave them food they are a bit okay but Im wondering if there is ssomething wrong with my blue parakeet! +We dont know what gender they are cuz they are babies and they have a big cage...and some toys

4 days ago an American Goldfish (female) started battering herself against the windows in my house. She would sit on the windowsills and knock repeatedly, and I could stand a foot in front of her and she would stare at me and continue pecking. She would flutter in midair, trying to get into the house if I opened the window. I thought she was hand-raised and decided, just to see, if she would go into a birdcage. I put a birdcage on top of the AC below her "favorite" pecking window. A few minutes later she landed on top of it. As tame as could be, she sat in the doorway of the cage and peeked in. Eventually she went in for a brief moment and sat on a branch-perch I put in. The cage is still there. And the day after (3 days ago), her mate joined her. They will both sit inside of the cage and then hop out and peck on the windows. I asked my uncle about it (he knows lots about birds) and he said that the birds just see their reflection. But I don't think so...not the way they're behaving. 2 days ago another pair of goldfinches started pecking at the windows. And it's not just as the windows with no curtains now. They also sit on top of the birdfeeder on my bedroom window and just WATCH me, and they usually flutter to the window when they see me. Weird.. Well today a friend of mine who lives around 40 miles away told me about small wild birds trying desperately to get into her house whenever they see people enter it. They ignore birdhouses (unusual since they always nest in the ones she set in her yard) and will try to squeeze themselves into windows if there is a crack open. I thought it was very, very unusual, and another friend noticed the same thing. We've never seen this behavior, in 3 different areas, all wild birds, and all trying to get into houses. I've just never seen it happen in the 10 years I've lived in PA. This might sound stupid, BUT, I've read that animals start behaving unusually before natural disasters. The number of missing animals goes up, animals start behaving weird, even wild animals will crawl INTO houses or under porches or decks in attempt to take safety. Not only is it happening with wild birds, but my parakeets (2) haven't been so noisy in the past 5-7 days. Normally every day they chitchat and scram and sing and go nuts with their toys, but they're just silent now. My cat Pumpkin usually sneaks outside, but now she will PELT out of the house when she hears a door open. My other cat Simon who was found at my house as a stray absolutely will do ANYTHING NOT to go outside. Yesterday he tried to sneak out....normally you'd basically have to force him out if you wanted him out there. ????????????

i always thought that birds of different species wouldn't try to take each other as mates. our parakeet, however, cornered and tried to mate with our new lovebird. i'm not sure as to the sex of the lovebird, but my parakeet is most definitely male. my question is, will they view each other as 'mates' and form that bond? and if my lovebird is female, would she lay non-fertile eggs? i highly doubt these birds could produce a hybrid, but i'd just like to know if i should continue seperating them or not. i don't house them together (for fear of them fighting), but when they're out of their cages, my parakeet likes to pin down my lovebird and is clearly trying to mate. please let me know!

Ive had her for 2 weeks and the whole time ive had her she hasnt flown. She's a lineolated parakeet so they climb more than they fly. anyway, 2 days ago she finally got the courage to come out of the cage for a stroll around my living room. Then i noticed as she was trying to get back to her cage (which is on a table) she couldnt get there. She was trying to fly but couldnt. i noticed as she tries to fly she is lopsided and doesnt come more than 10-15cm off the floor. Ive also noticed she never puts her wing down as flat as the other one but she can open it fine when she is bathing etc. Maybe she has had it broken when she lived in the aviary i got her from and it has healed wrong? shes happy as anything, eats and drinks and climbs and sings a lot so i dont think its bothering her, im just worried that she cant fly. I have a side table that she manages to get up onto by climbing up the wire from my lamp, from here she 'jumps' over to her cage which is about 30cm away from there. Is she ok or should i take her to a vet? is there anything a vet can do if the wing has healed wrong? how much would vet bills be roughly in the UK? Thanks

So one day was next to my computer and i heard a weaird noise at my cage. When i looked i saw the male on top of the female and they were in the feeding cup doing it. will they lay eggs?

I want to get a parakeet but I only have this one cage but its really small. I was thinking I could just put him there at night and let him out in the day when I get back from school. The cage would always be open so he can go in and out to get food.and another question, can they be potty trained or am I gonna have to clean up all the s**t?

I have a lineolated parakeet and a budgie who live together in the same cage. Ive had them almost 2 weeks and i have decided to get another linnie and another budgie so they can breed. Is it ok to keep all 4 birds in the same cage? (cage is huge dont worry) will they mate when all in the same cage with 2 nesting boxes on the bottom of the cage? Ive also never bred a bird, any advice/steps to be taken? such as what i should feed the new birds when they hatch? do i need to do anything with the eggs or help them hatch etc? when can i sell the babies? Thanks

Im 13 years old and i've been researching on ferrets for the past 5 or more years. I am a HUGE animal lover. I had 2 hamsters before but i never really thought they liked me, or anyone really. I currently have 2 dogs, 1 cat, a lot of fish (2 tanks) , and 2 parakeets. My birds dont really like anyone either. I always wanted my own pet that i could really bond with and i found that a ferret is a good match for me. I was looking at the ferret nation 142 cage on amazon but i dont think they make it anymore (do they?) or maybe the ferret nation 182. I am a pretty lonely girl mostly because i am an only child and i am EXTREMELY shy and have a hard time making friends. I just want permission from my parents to let me buy one for my 14th birthday (on thanksgiving) and a christmas present combined, i was thinking it would be better to get it as an early present during the summer so i can spend more time with it, i mainly need to convince my dad becuaes he thinks their stinky and he doesn;t want me to have one even though i'll pay for all it's expenses. Also, i live in Waukesha, Wi (near milwaukee) and i don't see any ferrets on petfinder near me because i'd like to adopt but i think i have to buy one from petco or somewhere else. Are ferrets worth the time and money. Do i have to get 2 ferrets or can i have 1 if i spend time with it a lot. What is a good ferret nation cage for one ferret? Any advice on convincing my parents? ~Thank you (a hopeful 13 yr old girl) i am also reading ferrets for dummies cover to cover so i am really trying to learn my best about them, plus all of the research for 5 yrs

I simply took her out of the bird cage and kept her in my hand, although I am not sure why she stands on one foot now. Can anything be done to fix this problem? Also, would it heal on its own if I just leave her be? Can a bird die if one foot is broken? Your help is greatly appreciated! :)

My mom and I found a parakeet on the sidewalk when we went for a walk and took it home. We couldn't just leave it outside. We brought him home and gave him some of my parrot's food and he immediately began eating it. We bought him a cage and once we put it together and put it on the floor beside him, he climbed right in all own his own. I keep trying to talk to him and he still seems a bit scared, but when he is on his own and we are not near the cage he seems fine. What can I do to make my new parakeet happy, healthy, and trust me?

i used to have a friend that had one, it would fly around her house at times, but it wouldn't try to escape. could even put him on a water mister outside and he wouldn't fly away... How do you train a parakeet to stay around? it makes me sad to think of a bird in a cage, but i think parakeets are cute. how is their noise level at night?

When I got her, I put the box she was in in her cage and let her fly out. It's been a few weeks and she's still not tame; the box is getting in the way of it cause she's always in it. How do I get it out without scaring her? There's only a small door in the front.

It's been a few weeks of trying to tame my budgie and she's still scared of me. She's settled into her cage and likes roaming around, but if freaked out when she sees my hand. I've tried a lot a of other ways. Is the method of leaving the cage open in a safe room a good way to gain trust with my budgie/parakeet?

I have had my parakeet for a month and 1 week. She still moves when i put my hand in the cage, she rarely lets me touch her, she jumps away when i do. What way can i get her used to me. And what music or bird noises should i play while at school. Please, help and leave links for music!!!!

I baught this parrot when it was around a week old. It had only white feathers, and now, around a month later, it has around 10% left. My question is, it now shows anger for some reason when I take it out of it's box. It partly spreads its wings, and opens it's beak and runs towards me. Mostly attacking my feet. Is it trying to be playful? I feed it 3-4 times a day, and let it walk about and play with it for 10-15 minutes. Otherwise its always in its box. The box is big enough for it to move about. I also have a cage, but someone told me not to put it in there yet because it is too young. Could it be because of the box?

ok i have 8 zebra finches and 6 budgies in seprate cages i want to know if they can live together for i can buy a big cage for them and put them all together. thanks for ur time

I want to know how long it took for your parakeet to be hand trained because I've had my parakeet for about 4-5 weeks already and he's shown progression on not being scared and let( never been able to pet my bird. Also had the greatest experience of him eating out of my hands which is also cool. I don't even think the perch trick is not working out for me. but every day i put my hand in the cage and he doesn't seem to get the picture or is just plain lazy or a little bit nervous. Please tell me your story thanks

My friend has a parakeet and he says they arent social, my granny b4 she died she had this bird named sunny, and he had red spots on his face, and like a yellow hat? thats what is looked like to me XD but whats a good type of bird, im 15 and i have a job so i can pay for it, im looking for like a meduim size cage so it cant be to big cause im working with a small room thanks!

Hi I have a Female Parakeet that she hacked her eegs a while ago but the baby bearly came out today from the nest box and i actually dont know how much i have to wait to take out from that cage to put it in his own cage he has full feathers but do i have to wait for something or i can take him out now without the parakeet female mother dosent get.? Please help. Thank you!

Its annoying to clean the perch so i was wonder if they would be fine just having swings to sit on.

adopted it. The only parrot I every had any experience was a boyfriend I once lived with who had a small amazon parrot. He had a rather large cage but we let him out every morning and he stayed out and had the run of the house until bed time when we put him back in his cage. My brother keeps his cockatiel in a parakeet cage. I believe it is much too small as the bird cannot even stretch his wings out and he has a rope for the bird stretched across the bottom of the cage in front of a mirror. The bird prefers the rope to the wooden perches so he spends a lot of time at the bottom of the cage and his tale is always sticking down through the bottom of the cage. Jim keeps him in his cage in the living room all day in front of the news which goes non stop. He is usually making a racket and I don't think he is very happy. You can tell he was really loved as he is very affectionate and wolf whistles and says pretty bird. My brother does let him out of the cage in the evening when he is in my brother's room. I think these birds are very smart and the bird deserves an interesting house with different levels and lots of toys and things to keep him interested. My brother is pretty handy building things and I think he could make somethink quite easily. I feel sorry for the bird and it really bothers me but my brother tells me it is his bird and I should mind my own business as he believes the birds is quite happy to sit in that small cage screaming and whistling at himself in his little mirror. He refuses to even consider my suggestions. I think this is cruel because if I was that bird I would be miserable. I think I am going to have go figure out how to make something larger and more interesting myself. I have to do it myself as I have my own animals a horse and a large pet goat and they take about every spare cent that I have. What do you think? Are cockatiels just naturally screamers? When Jim is gone and I play soft music for the bird he seems much quieter. Any suggestions or any experienced cockatiel owners out there. Thanks.

Whenever I wear it, she rushes out of the cage and attacks it. I wonder why? The color is off white I don't thing it is the color.

Well we are building a huge enclosure for our iguana and water dragon, it will be one big thing with a BLOCKADE between them, no chances! We've built one before, our problem being we used cheap material, and the found there exits, so now we have parakeets! So any ideas on making a big sturdy enclosure capable of holding a blockade?:D I was thinking maybe pipes or sturdier wood.

For years I have been trying to encourage my parakeet to come out of his cage. He likes me, and is used to my hand being in the cage, he also knows how to step up. The thing is any time I tried taking him out he either freaked, or would hop off my hand before he could come out. Lately I have been taking the roof off of his cage since the doorway is kind of narrow (at least I think it would be) and his cage is rather large to begin with, it's got 6 different perch's and is big enough to keep two cockatoo's in since if he wasn't going to come out I wanted him to have room to play. Well yesterday was I was doing homework, I looked over and noticed he was outside, sitting on top of his cage! I was so excited cause this is the first time he has ever come out willingly, and the first time he's come out on his own. Today when I came home, I did the same, and he continued to do the same. The thing is, he likes climbing and sitting on top of it and I figured cause it's what he's used to and it makes him feel safe. My question is that if he does start flying around or exploring like he already has (he went over to my guinea pigs cage) if I should just let him do his own thing and leave him alone or not. I'm afraid he's going to poop in the guinea pigs cage and itll get in her food or something. Any advice would help, thanks!

i have four parakeets ( a dad *store bought*, two daughters, and another store bought baby male bird) i have 2 blue, a green and a yellow. They are not mean birds but they don't like humans very much. they just need more attention but im not really a bird person so my parents are letting me "trade" my four birds and use the money to buy a pet ferret. The four bird will probably be sold together and come with 1 big cage, 1 small cage, a bag of food, bedding, a nesting box ( for breeding ) and cage Accessories. Where should i sell the birds? and how much should i ask for. ( they are all very healthy birds) please and thanks! ive had the 3 for over 2 years now.. i have no luck with trying to befriend them

ok, I have a yellow one that's pretty nice. When I moved out of my parents house, I got a baby parakeet so my other wouldn't be lonely when I took him away from our other parakeets. The new one was mean though, so I put them in sperate cages. The green one loves his toys but the yellow one seems bored. I heard they would get along with females, so I bought a little yellow female and a white one that I liked, but I think it's male. They yellow one gets along with the new ones but the green one doesn't. The littel female didn't seem very healthy, so I took her back to petco. They've been treating her and she's getting her finaly check up today, then I should be able to get her back. While she's been gone, the white one was stressing my yellow one, so I put it with the green. The white actually holds his own with the green, but seems a little annoyed. But what I HATE is that whenever I go near the cages, the white one freaks out and squaks like I'm killing it! It used to let me pick it up, but it was in a scared and compliant way, like his feahters were tight, not relaxed. I'm hoping he'll chill when I bring the girl back, but if not, should I return him? My friend's recommending an english budgie because they are nicer, but I'm not sure how to handle the ones I got!

Hello! I am considering getting a Budgie (Parakeet) as a pet! I have never had a bird before, so I'm trying to learn as much about them as possible! I've been reading online about the size cages that budgies need, and I keep finding different answers on what is best. I have a bird cage that is about 18x23x17. It's a rectangle long-ways, so it's 18 in tall, 23in long on one side and the other side is 17 in. Is that an ideal cage size for a single budgie? I've read on several sites that it is better to have a long cage, rather than tall, because they can hop back and forth from their perches easily. And would my budgie really be happy with only a mirror and not a companion? Or do they only love mirrors so much because they really do want to have another bird with them? I plan on training my bird to potty in his/her cage, so that they can fly around my room. Would flying around my room for at least an hour every day be enough exercise for the little guy? I just want to make sure I do everything right! I've always loved birds so much, and I don't want to accidentally put a little budgie in a cage too small for it to be happy! Also, if you have any other budgie advice, I'd love to hear it! Thanks in advance!

PLEASE READ FULL STORY! IT IS IMPORTANT! THANK YOU!!!! This is kind of a long story. So I've had this parakeet for about 6 weeks, and at about the fourth week he had complete trust in me and was completely tame. But recently, we had to move him from my bedroom to a new location in the house. Today something kind of interesting happened today also. My mom stuck her hand in Perry's cage, and he completley freaked out and flew out of the cage. He is usually contained in one section of the house, but I forgot to close the door, and he flew into another room and my puppy kind of got at his tail feather, completley freaking him out. He then flew up the stairs, and into my parents small bathroom cabinet. At this point, he wasn't even responding to spray millet, which is completely irresistable to him. I started moving things aroung in the cabinet, hoping to nake him get out of there, but when he did, he twice fell into a bathtub full of water, and hu kind of started sinking. I was able to save him before he actually sunk down far (his back and face never got under the water) but he was still really freaked out. I held him and carried him back to his cage soaking wet, which i know they hate but I really had no other option. Anyways, since then he has been very unresponsive to millet and other foods, and has just been standing there. I know that I have lost his trust, and he is possibly in shock. Is it possible to regain a parakeet's trust that you have lost? If so, how? Thanks!

I had neglected to clean his cage and now he just sits in the corner. He is usually very loud and active. Sadly I can not take him to the vet.

I had neglected to clean his cage and I have also noticed he is constantly bobbing his head.

Okay please deal with me, I'm very sad because I lost my parakeet about a week ago. He was about 5 or 6 years old, and I heard most parakeets live up to 10 years old. I was going to change his water one day and he was at the bottom of the cage dead. I was extremely nervous at first and I'm very depressed. Although he lived his life not too comfortable around people he gets nervous only if you put your hand in his cage, otherwise he's a very happy bird. What could have caused his death? I knew how to take care of him. Could it have been his age or did he get too nervous around the people in the household? I'm really sad right now so... Please no negative comments. @Sunny D: Thanks for your kindness and I'm sorry for your loss too :c. That was really generous to say though. Thanks ^_^

There was a single parakeet at the pet store who was being given away for free, so of course, I brought her home, she was alone, and I know parakeets are better with a friend, so I went to another store and bought one more. Now the one I actually purchased WAS really friendly from the beginning. It always perched on my finger, never spazzed out when I put my hands in the cage to change the water and food, etc, but now, she's like, really evil. The first one I got for free never really liked to be touched and always freaked out when I changed the water and food, but when I introduced her to the second one, they hit it off immediately and became best friends. Cool. But now... the new one doesn't want to be messed with either. They are freaking out every time someone walks by the cage. Do you think the first one communicated with the second one and became anti social or something? The first one came with a very small cage, too small for even one bird, so when I got the second one, I also spent a good $200 on a new cage that can comfortably hold up to 8 birds, but they have it all to themselves. Plenty of flying room, plenty of food, always fresh water... What's going on with them?

I have a parakeet and a budgie, they are caged together. they have plenty of food and fresh water. How long can i leave them alone? like if i wanted to go out for the day walking or shopping or for a meal etc (VERY rare) or even my part time job which is a 6 hour shift. how long do you leave your birds alone for?i can understand a single pet bird needing someone home pretty much all of the time but what about birds that live together who have eachother for company?? Thanks

I was basically "given" four spice finches with a tiny little cage about 3 weeks ago. Since then, I've got them into a decent sized flight cage (30x18x18). They are eating a parakeet seed mix that is mixed about half and half with ground up cockatiel pellets (I haven't been able to find any finch pellets, and I already have the cockatiel pellets so I figured they are basically the same thing). I got them a nest "thing" today (that all four them immediately fell in love with and are now managing to stuff themselves into it, it has room for all four of them, they can even all poke their heads out together, pretty cute) with some nesting material. I was worried about getting them a bath, but their new water dish is plenty big enough for them to splash around in. They always have a millet spray in with them, I just recently got a millet spray holder so it's not sitting on the bottom getting pooped on. I am so used to small parrots like cockatiels and conures, so I have no idea if I am even doing anything right. Please tell me what else I should be doing for them!

I have two adorable budgies around 3-4 years old. They're healthy. They play with their toys, go to the vet, I let them out of their cage every day, etc. But when it comes to trying new foods, they are very stubborn. I've tried giving them apples, carrots, and pellets but they barely eat them. The only thing other than seeds that they'll eat are greens. I can't just let them eat seeds and greens for the rest of their life. What's a good way that I can introduce new foods to them?

Hi. I wanna hand tame my parakeets. I can get them on a stick/perch and so sometimes my hand, but when I do they never want to come out of the cage. They cling to the nearest perch possible and stay there. What can I do?

I spent time with her a lot and left my hand in the cage for a week and she got comfortable with me. But then, I've spent 2 days starting perch training and she became really scared of me. I've paused the training for a while cause she's so freaked out whenever I'm near her now period. What do I do now? Should I just leave her a lone for a while? Do some different type of training? Any advice?

Parakeet Cage Requirements

Parakeet cage requirements, what bird cages to avoid, recommended parakeet cages...

    Parakeet Cage Requirements:
  • The cage should not be made of toxic metals such as zinc, lead, or brass (wet brass tarnishes - this tarnish is toxic). Stainless steel is best or powder-coated.
  • Do not put your parakeet in a cage that is rusted or has chipping paint.
  • If you find an old cage in the attic, basement, trash-picking, or at a yard sale that only has a few rusty patches or a little chipping paint and you want to re-paint it for your parakeet - DON'T. Throw it out and get a new cage on eBay. The cost of getting a cage sanded down and then powder-coated is more than you would pay for a new cage on eBay.
  • Big enough for the parakeet to not only fully turn around and spread out their wings, but to fly from one side to another - a absolute minimum of 18x18x24.. Buy the biggest cage you can afford. Parrot cages are MUCH cheaper online than they are in the petstore. Please check ebay for new parrot cages at great prices!
  • Horizontal bars because parakeets love to climb!
  • Width is more important than height as parakeets fly horizontally.
  • Bar spacing should be no wider than 1/2 inch so that the parakeet doesn't get their head stuck between the bars. Their heads are smaller than they look!
  • No round cages - a parakeet doesn't feel safe in a round cage - there is no back wall to retreat to. Along the same lines, be sure there is a wall behind at least one side of the cage.
  • A good size rectangular cage is best - the palace shape or house shapes actually restrict the room the parakeet has to fly and play and create a mess of poop and food the others do not.
  • Do not place the cage next to a window. Drafts can cause the parakeet to become sick. Keep the cage out of direct sunlight.
  • Place the cage in a room you spend alot of time in (though not the kitchen - because of fumes and hot unsafe surfaces) but that will be quiet at night.
  • Parakeets require alot of mental stimulation. Be sure they have lots of fun toys and that you rotate the toys frequently so that they do not become bored and so they get used to change.
  • Parakeet-proof the room the parakeet will be flying in by making sure no open water surfaces, open windows/doors, uncurtained windows, other pets, etc will harm them.
  • Be sure to cover the cage at night to provide darkness and a secure cover to prevent night-frights.
  • Several perches of varying widths are necessary to promote healthy feet and legs and to prevent foot sores caused by plain wooden dowels. We recommend the wood branch perches and rope perches.
  • Avoid: sand perch covers (cause foot sores), mite protectors (cause respiratory illness), bedding (breeds fungus and can cause crop impaction when injested) - paper towels or plain newsprint are best so you can watch poops for health.
  • Covered food and water dishes so parakeets don't poop in them and get sick.
  • Cuttle bone to chew on. It's good for their beaks and provides needed calcium.
  • Use pipe cleaners or twist ties to secure all cage doors and windows. Parakeets are smart little buggers and can quickly and easily figure out how to give themselves some unsupervised out time!
  • Place the best wood perches up high - and the stone ones that are good for toe nail health down low. Parakeets like to be up high and will spend most of their time on the nicer perches that are good for their feet. We don't recommend using the wooden dowels that come with cages for anything other than step-ups and collecting parakeets from around the room to return to their cages.
  • Make sure there is a food bowl for each parakeet in the cage so that they don't have to fight over it or the dominant parakeet doesn't let the other parakeets near the food.
  • If you are going to have several parakeets in the same cage - it's better to move them at the same time rather than moving a new bird into another's birds cage to avoid territorial issues.
