Parakeet recommendations - Parakeet Cage Questions
Question #1:
So i've been searching craigslist for around a couple months now and think i have found the perfect cage. It provides plenty of space for the parakeet/budgie i'm getting soon. Its really nice, especially for the price. The only issue is the bar spacing, which happens to be 3/4 inch and more than recommended. Its quite frustrating that this near perfect cage has this tiny yet important flaw. So i was wondering if this would matter too much? Also, would getting an english budgie make much of a difference?

Question #4:
I have two parakeets, a blue male: Blizzard, and a rare female: Minty. (Rare parakeet is the breed, she is gray, yellow, green, black and white.)
They live in this cage:

and I keep one of the blue top roofs propped open so they can fly around whenever they want in my (birdy proofed) room.
They have a rope perch, three wooden, and a couple plastic swings. They always have access to millet spay, and occasionally I put in birdy treat sticks. They have an assortment of toys that I rotate every once and a while, and they always have fresh bird seeds and water. (their water is in a bird bath that they drink/swim in.):

They get daily attention by me and my family, and will perch on your finger and Minty gives "kisses" (she will lean over to your lips and give you a peck) :)
They don't have their wings clipped - I don't like the thought of them not being able to fly as they're meant to.
Also, the only eat their seeds/treat sticks/ and millet spray. Occasionally they will munch on some Triscut crackers, but I'm thinking they're shredding them more that eating it. they won't touch any veggies or fruits, and I cant get them to eat pellets (which I know are better for them) so.. help??
Oh, their cage is cleaned daily, too.
thanks!!
rate 10 to 1. 10 being amazing, and 1 being poor.
tell me what to improve on. I wan't them to live long, healthy, happy lives.
(I've had them for nearly 10 years.)
Okay, typo! i've had them for nearly 4 years.. whoops. thanks for everyone whose answered, i will definitely try switching to pellets and introducing new healthy foods :)

Question #6:
My grandma wants a bird. She already has two dogs. She says she will wait till he gets a house though to rent or buy. She wants a parrot but i'm not for sure if she knows that much about them all the birds she ever had was a budgie/parakeet and two doves. Is their any like small parrots or anything like that and can u give me information for that bird? Any place we could get cheap bird cages to?
She wants a cute personality and one that can talk real good. It can't be to loud like a cockatoo.
Would a parrotlet be good or what is a good parrot for her?
Plus how do u keep them from being mean when they grow up like when they get hormones

Question #10:
I was having a heated conversation with my boss, no yelling, just a lot of emphasizing. His two birds started almost chirping every time I was talking, so loud that it disrupted the whole conversation. They were almost screaming with their chirping. I started joking around and yelling "shut up" to them and then they would be quiet. The second I started talking again them started chirping so loud I had to stop my conversation. This time I walked over to their cage and told them to shut up again. (I'm not a mean person, I was more less being funny with my boss, but really they were embarrassing.
I've never had much to do with his birds, for that matter, neither does he except to change the paper on the cage floor, and water and feed them. But these birds were like trying to drown me out or shut me up. At least that is the way I perceived it. It was really bizarre and it kind of bothers me. What was up with these birds?
Question #11:
Square or round, dome or flat top, how large? Any good links or suggestions on where to purchase one?
Question #12:
I have a one year old budgie named romeo. he doesn't bite me and he'll get on my finger, but he isn't affectionate at all. i try to play with him and he'll fly back to his cage. i hear all about how loving parakeets can be with their owners and i want Romeo and I to have a loving relationship too, help?
Question #13:
I've had this parakeet for around six years now. he has never used his cuddle bone, and his beak became overgrown. he has scissors beak. at the time, I knew nothing about this and so I trimmed the beak myself with finger nail clippers. it seemed to work, and he still eats just fine. and I have been doing this for six years now, trimming it every time it got too overgrown and out of place. I researched this, and found that this can be cause by they're diet? maybe he is lacking something? but I have another parakeet in the cage with him and she is just fine. her beak is perfect and shes healthy. I tried a special diet for him, it didn't work. and now I have noticed that one side of hid beak seems to be getting smaller???!!! like it is deteriorating or something? I don't know what to do. will he die? I read that I could have had a vet trim the beak correctly and it may have grown back into place normally. i wish i had looked that up sooner. He needs to see a vet, but I don't have the money. does anyone know why he beak is that way? or anything I can do to help it???
Question #14:
I've been researching parakeets for 4 hours, and in videos they're outside of the cage a lot. So I just want to know when should you trust them for sure. Once he will hop on your finger?
Question #15:
I just got a new Cockatiel and Lovebird and I want to make sure I can train them to love me like my old parakeets did but im not sure if im going with the right way. I use to have a Cockatiel and a Lovebird but I couldnt seem to get them to appreciate me the way I got my parakeet too and I cant have another anti social bird. My lovebird currently sits in his cage and screams basically all day long and I cant seem to get him to calm down. He seems to only do this when im in the room but it doesn't seem to be for me to go get him because once I approach his cage he backs away like he doesnt want to be touched. I dont understand what hes asking. I can get him to sit on my hand for a short period of time and can sometimes get him to step up but apart from that he wont cooperate.
My Cockatiel on the other hand is much more calm. He will sit on the end of his cage by me and wont run away as fast but I still cant stick my hand in the cage and only accepts millet seeds from me. He leaves me any chance he gets and it just leaves me thinking im doing something wrong....i got them both at the same time 3 weeks ago and they are both about 6 months old.
Maybe I accidentally skipped a step with them? and if so is it too late to turn back? They are both in the same cage (my lovebird seems to really like clinging on to the cockatiel) is that possibly getting in the way? Does anyone have any advice? I mean when I have downtime I do my best to take them out to hang out with me but like I said they always try to get away. I don't like forcing them out of the cage but if they wont simply come then how am I supposed to get them use to me? They sleep in my room..they watch me do everything and I am not cruel to them in any way. I speak to them nicely and smile and try to make them feel as home as possible. Even trying to reward them with the millet's anytime they come out but it hasn't seemed to warm them up to me as much as Id like them to.
So I guess what im trying to ask is am I on track with them or is there something I can do better??
Question #16:
Ahh! Its a LARGE store, this is the second day the bird has been flying loose! I just learned about it today, and I want this bird back in her cage, I'm so worried for her! Her old cage is open, with food and water in it. I'm supposing she has been eating the wild bird seed that is out, I don't know where she could be getting water though!:(
How can I get her back?
Serious answers please! This is for the health of the bird here. I know you guys are against pet stores, but come on!
Question #17:
I didn't see how it happened, but i had put her (my birdy) in her cage and walked to the bathroom. Next thing i hear is her shrills. I ran into the room and the was there. I put the cat out and immediately checked my birdy. The cat managed to injure the chest under her wing, and it isn't bleeding a lot, and stopped within seconds, but it worries me a lot. I have read that cats carry bacteria deadly to birds. And i really want to go to the vet but I don't have the money to go. I hope I can get advice here. Please it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
